Wimbledon is upon us again, and with it, the rain. Will Murray do it this year? Can he keep his emotional outbursts in check? I hope there is someone out there with the full complement of shots, not just the rather boring serve and volley. Top commentator has to be John McEnroe with a nice touch of self-deprecation although Becker’s not bad. Dan Maskell’s “Oh I say!” will be missed.
What of cricket? Ireland are the new kids on the block and England have had some recent success. But for my money it’s hard to beat village green matches. I have very fond memories of sitting in a deck chair making up names for the players who sported white on Putney Heath near the Green Man pub. Charles Twilly, a former St George’s chorister, like myself, was the manager of the nearby Telegraph Inn, but the Green Man was older and had more character. There was a rhyme we used to tease Mr Twilly with when I was a lad, and it’s not too hard to imagine how the rhyme was formed.
