Free at last

There are many opportunities for creative thinking, necessity being a right mother and all that. Some writers have put their stuff online free of charge and live streaming of cancelled public events is now a thing.

Even the Grand National was organised as a virtual race. Bookies gave the proceeds to help the NHS.

I am now getting Amazon’s video and music. The free first month suckered me in, but listening to Pino Daniele, Florence and the Machine and Edith Piaf as I did other online stuff was pleasant. The Bluetooth speaker had been gathering dust, but makes a decent noise. Obviously, I won’t be cancelling after 30 days.

Some are trying to exploit the situation, expecting artists to create free content. But then some people don’t see the true worth of art at the best of time. Grayson Perry was on the radio giving an interesting talk about why not everything is art. It brought back some of the stuff I learnt about the philosophy of aesthetics.

Context plays a big part in people’s perception of art. Put a urinal in a gallery and it’s art. Have a renowned critic praise a pile of bricks and its art. Grayson Perry wanted a magic power to go round declaring what isn’t art like some Harry Potter character.

Banksy used his magic to unbanksy his own mural when someone tried to remove it in order to sell it. The artistic intention is important. If you have embraced that, or at least entered the same conceptual space, you wouldn’t go around trying to remove a Banksy from a wall.
