Yep, I have pre-registered for some more Philosophy with the Open University starting in October. There will be 6 course books and I have bought the recommended textbook, an anthology of Western Philosophy by John Cottingham.

The course is in 6 parts: (1) the self (2) philosophy of religion (3) ethics (4) knowledge (5) philosophy of mind (6) political philosophy.

Plenty to get the brain cells buzzing. I dipped into the anthology and read a bit of Plato’s dialogue with his old friend Socrates talking about knowledge and our innate understanding, suggesting that we do not learn so much as recollect what we already know. Aristotle probably wouldn’t agree – I must ask him.

Consequentialism vs Kantianism is not a pay-per-view fight I’ll grant you, but a comparison of two contrasting ethical philosophies. Do we do things or not do things merely because of the consequences? Kant reckoned that there are things that are intrinsically right or wrong. That should be an interesting discussion.
