Droning on

Putin’s war is brought home to the Russian people by Ukrainian drone strikes on their capital city. The lie of ‘special military operations’ can no longer be perpetrated on the dictator’s population.

Obviously the Russian missile strikes on civilian targets are deadlier, but drone attacks on Russia are as much about letting the Russians know what Ukrainians are experiencing as hitting back at a superpower.

Ukrainian drone strikes at Russian naval vessels are less contentious than random attacks on schools, hospitals and city centres. If Putin thought that bombing Ukraine’s cities would weaken the resolve of its people he was mistaken.

Putin’s use of mercenaries has embarrassed him. When the Wagner Group turned tail and threatened to march on Moscow it was a bit of a surprise. The morale of Russia’s conscripted soldiers must be at a low point as the Ukrainians push the invaders back.

Nobody wants to see an escalation of the war, but Zelensky has no reason to agree to a cessation of hostilities while Russian troops still occupy Ukrainian territory.
