There was a time when we were more on top of things, particularly gardening. We have a small front garden with a square of grass and bushy plants up to the low metal fence. At the back of the house the ground slopes gradually down to the wooden fencing.

How it was

We planted a tree when we first moved in. I couldn’t tell you its name, but the birds are attracted by the bird feeders we hang off its branches. It needs trimming, but it has grown too tall for even the extendable tools we bought some time ago.

Beyond the tree the ground flattens and there is a patch of lawn. Our youngest planted blackcurrant and raspberry bushes at the edges. We have two sapling apple trees and a variety of wild flowers.

Along the drive there is a channel of earth that the weeds have taken over. They are beyond poisoning so we will have to find some other method for getting rid of them.

We have bought a lethal looking implement with a rotating blade. That might do it…
