The final chapter of book 4 of my distance learning course raises some interesting ideas about the meaning of life. John Cottingham is one of the philosophers we are asked to study. His analysis of the doctrines and practices of both Western and Eastern religions is well thought out. Cottingham is of the opinion that religious practices rather than doctrines are more significant to a meaningful life. Nagel refutes the argument that because we will all die and the universe will cease to exist, life has no meaning. Time is not a composite, this moment of my life may have meaning for me now.
