At 4 pm this afternoon 34 horses and their jockeys will thunder around the racecourse at Aintree to compete in one of the most prestigious races in the horse racing calendar.
Picking a winner will be tricky because the horses have to jump 30 fences and race over 4 miles to the winning post. Every year a number of horses fail to jump a fence or unsaddle their jockey.
It is a race that attracts millions of punters. Some people back longshots hoping for a big payout, others study the racing form and may pick the favourite. This year’s favourite is probably I am Maximus which was last year’s winner. My longshot bet is a horse called Senior Chief and the odds of it winning are 41 to 1. With those odds an each way bet makes sense.,If it finishes in the first six horses I would still get a fifth of the odds.
I have backed five horses each way, so I have a good chance of one of them being amongst the leaders after 4 miles. Wish me luck.
