Week two of my distance learning course in philosophy and I’m already playing catch up. The topic under discussion is Beauty and it is not as easy as it might sound. Platitudes like ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ don’t cut it with most philosophers.

Do we need informed judgements to decide if an object is beautiful? Is natural beauty different from works of art? Is Aquinas right to include beauty in his ‘transcendentals’? In other words a quality that transcends the everyday with divine inspiration.
So, plenty to get my teeth into and time to start thinking as well as reading and taking notes.
