Having clocked up my three score years and ten, I feel entitled to my senior citizen travel card and any other concessions going. The aching hips, knees and shoulders are brief inconveniences, usually first thing in the morning. I have always had trouble with my teeth because of an inherited condition (dentinogenesis imperfectum in case you were interested). This week another crown bit the dust. The tooth that formed the post has broken, so some small metal posts may have to be inserted into what’s left of my tooth in order to stick a new crown on. I go to a private dentist because his treatment is significantly better than the torture inflicted on me last time by an inexperienced NHS dentist who left my face bruised.
I am a type 2 diabetic, so I should be more careful about my diet. I need to lose weight and do not have the willpower to reduce portion sizes, reduce alcohol consumption and give up sweet things. Mounjaro has been prescribed by my NHS doctor. The mild nausea it causes is helpful in restraining my overeating.
Although none of these changes in my general and dental health have come as a surprise, it still seems strange to be heading for my dotage. Walking is no longer a pleasure, so my ebike is my preferred means of getting around. To keep the grey matter functioning I am studying a postgraduate course in philosophy. This week it’s Global Justice a topic I am new to studying.
I am hoping that a new mattress will cushion my hips overnight so that discomfort and aches will be a thing of the past. In all other respects I am happy to age disgracefully.
