The outrageous title gives it away, doesn’t it? I do give a toss, and those who shun tossing in favour of heating up some pale imitation of a pancake, clearly don’t give a toss. They may hold to the view that their way is better, but they’d be full of crepe.
Shriving is all about the toss. Get out your skillet, flex those forearm muscles and toss till you drop. Delia, the cookbook goddess, makes it all so simple and if you substitute a little bit here and there from the Delia recipe – it won’t matter unless you go crazy and substitute orange juice for milk.
I tossed about 10-12 pancakes and kept them warm in the oven. Honey, lemon and sugar made for delicious sweet pancakes. Mushrooms, cream, couscous and garlic were my choice for savoury pancakes.
There must surely be a poem dedicated to the pancake…
Flipping Pancakes by C Richard Miles
Now that Pancake Day has come,
Flipping pancakes is such fun.
First crack eggs into a bowl;
Whisk them briskly for us all.
Sprinkle flour nice and white;
Add some milk to make it right.
Make the batter thick not runny;
Tasty pancakes for my tummy.
Cook it in a frying pan;
Flip and catch it if you can.
Flipping pancake’s on the floor;
Oops I missed: I’ll make some more.
Flipping pancakes, I have found
Less fun, second time around.
Never mind, let’s flip once more;
Flipping heck – it’s on the floor.
Third time lucky – hope it works;
Still that sinking feeling lurks.
Flip that pancake; yes- you’ve guessed:
On the floor with all the rest.
Flipping pancakes – what a pain.
Flipping pancakes; not again.
Flipping pancakes – go away;
Come again next Shrove Tuesday.
