The shops were crowded, the toddler’s need to pee urgent. Unable to get to a toilet in time, the parents of the two year old held him as he peed in the Hong Kong street – nothing particularly unusual in this scenario. Why then has the Chinese social networking site, Sina Weibo, gone viral with this story?
Hong Kong imposes a 2000 HK $ fine for urinating in public. Perhaps these visitors from mainland China were unaware of the bye laws. Opinion is certainly divided on the isssue. What is bizarre is the public reaction at the time. A crowd confronted the parents and jostled them as someone took video pictures of the confrontation.
One irate online supporter of the parents has suggested taking extreme action, urging people to bring their children to urinate on the streets of Hong Kong with the closing comment “let’s see who will come and take photos?”.
Public urination is obviously a hot topic, but let’s hope our streets do not run green with the fury of parents’ indignation.
