human rights 2

Not a week after the general election and the victorious Tories are on the hurry up to repeal the Human Rights Act (HRA).

There has been no public debate about the Bill of Rights (that is intended to replace HRA). Will it embrace all the rights in the European Convention or water down basic freedoms established since Magna Carta? Is it just a bit of anti EU propaganda?

Opposition to the Tories’ proposal comes from the devolved assemblies and from within its own ranks.

The government won’t risk taking on the SNP, so the proposed legislation will exclude Scotland. Gerry Adams, the leader of Sinn Fein, is looking for the Dail’s support in opposing the repeal of the HRA. Jesse Norman MP and Peter Osborne have published a useful booklet in favour of the HRA.

Let’s hope the SNP blocks any legislation that curtails the freedom of its neighbours.
