We smuggled a miniature bottle of blended whiskey (mum’s tipple) into ICU. A few drops with her chicken soup hit the spot. She was having a better day and the tiny amount of alcohol satisfied her rebellious craving.

This is a difficult time for us all. Watching someone you love struggle to survive amidst the paraphernalia of modern medicine and the quiet dignity of doctors, nurses and other families is almost surreal.

The end of life issues and ethical choices are not easy to contemplate. My mother’s views seem clear cut. She cannot see the point of this gruelling road to recovery, only for her to go through it all again the next time she has a heart attack. I am less clear about whether she will still feel like that if she is sitting back home with a good book and a glass of whiskey.
