The Wondrous Rose by Ann Russell

The sweetest scent I e’er did take

Was when I stumbled, by mistake

Upon a garden, beauteous fair –

Its very fragrance filled the air.

And there I searched for many hours

To find amongst the lovely flowers

That very blossom, from whose kind

Came that sweet scent, which filled my mind.

Then in a corner I did see

A fragrant, scarlet blooming tree

Of heavenly roses Oh the sight!

It filled my senses with delight…

Even the very earth did take

The dying leaves for beauty’s sake…
