New Era

President Trump is being inaugurated even as I type. This challenging new era should not be prejudged because the wheels of government may well turn as usual. Change does not happen easily, as President Obama discovered despite being elected on just that mandate.

What might happen is that previous reforms are undone, but again that might prove harder than expected. As a businessman we would predict that the new President will be in favour of self-reliance and less government intervention. Lower taxes are always popular until you need the services that tax cuts have removed.

American foreign policy is not held in high regard, so forging stronger ties with Putin and al-Assad will not come as a huge surprise. Maintaining nuclear detente is more worrisome and not an area that will benefit from the sort of sabre rattling populists like.

The President will swear an oath that ” I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

That historic document declares “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America…”

Well that sounds ok, doesn’t it? Justice, tranquility and so on are all admirable aims…
