As a half-hearted entrepreneur, I am looking for a new opportunity to exploit. It occurred to me that portals for writers might be one such opportunity.

Obviously, it would be foolish to set out my entire business plan, but it’s not giving too much away to describe the bare bones of my idea.

The thing that I need most when writing is feedback. Having crafted a form of words I want someone to read them and give me an honest review. There was a website for budding scriptwriters which provided just that sort of feedback. There was some sort of arrangement whereby you had to review a given number of scripts before you could submit your own masterpiece for dissection.

On the last MOOC I took on writing a poem there were stages along the course you could submit your writing for review and you would receive work from a fellow student to comment on.

There were conventions to be respected which encouraged positive criticism but cautioned against the sort of comments that would cause injury to the writer. I kept my own comments respectful, which was just as well because some people use poetry writing as a form of catharsis. The death of a loved one often the source of emotional outpourings.

Budding writers might enjoy the social networking aspect of the write and review process, but other resources would have to be available to make the portal attractive.

At this point, I can foresee how huge the project could become. I would need to keep it relevant but not get carried away with reinventing the wheel.

My other brilliant idea is for an app that would tell you how many times your team had been in the opponent’s half of the field or penalty area without scoring or coming away with any points.

As a rugby supporter, I often wonder at just those kind of stats. The chance to look at your phone and notice that after seven onslaughts on the visiting team’s try line our side has racked up zero points might be a bit simplistic. However, as with all stats, you could make all kinds of comparisons and predictions. The gambling community might be interested.  I could get some cockney superstar to promote the app on the telly and make gazillions….
