Why vote?

In our part of the world there is much disillusionment with politics and politicians. Some hark back to the good old days when those who controlled things in their areas were visible and easily identifiable by their attire. Combat jackets, balaclavas and sunglasses were de rigeur for anyone toting an AK47.

Peace has its price and compromise was extracted from the key players after years of negotiations. Today Stormont, the imperial bastion on a hilltop on the outskirts of Belfast stands idle. There was a scandal over wood pellets, Martin McGuinness resigned as Deputy Leader and the stalemate continues to stall devolved government in ‘Backstopland’.

That’s the potted history over. Why vote?

  1. If nobody voted what would be the result? What if so few people voted that no one had any confidence in those elected? How low a turnout would it take for an election to be null and void?
  2. Voting is a hard-won right and is enforced in some countries. It should not be squandered just because the choices are poor.
  3. If you don’t vote, you can’t blame the government you get for the decisions they make.
