I was fortunate to have been born in NHS England. My teeth have a genetic condition that affected the growth of dentine. As a result, I needed a lot of treatment to protect all my teeth as I was growing up, and crowns when I had stopped growing.
The crowns did their job, but my fondness for boiled sweets probably contributed to patches of dental decay. Aged 64 I had three teeth pulled and a plate fitted.
So now I have to decide whether to stick with the plate or go for implants. I will need two implants and a bridge across them. The cost will be about £5,000.
The plate was painful to insert for the first few weeks, then snug without the pain, but now it flops about when I open my jaws. This is embarrassing when eating in public.
I have bought some dental fixative and have just applied it to the plate. I doubt if I will get used to this, so the implants are looking like a real possibility when I can lay my hands on 5 grand.
