Brexit continues to divide people. If leaving the EU is such a great idea, what about breaking up the United Kingdom? Scottish independence could be the subject of another referendum. Irish unity might look more promising than the reintroduction of border posts.

Divided kingdom

In other words, instead of making good use of all those austerity measures to revive the UK economy, the business community is preparing for the mass of documentation that will be needed to move goods across EU borders, and the pound is worth much less against the Euro and US $.

Boris’ government is making a last-ditch effort to leave the EU with an agreement about the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland. Few commentators hold out any hope that the EU will accept the changes to a deal that was negotiated with Theresa May’s government.

The DUP in Westminster prop up the Tories. Sinn Fein could disrupt things if they took up their seats, but that’s not going to happen. Devolved government is a joke in  Northern Ireland where MLAs have not sat in Stormont for three years, but continue to draw their salaries and expenses.

Socialism has splintered support in Europe where nationalistic right-wing parties have gained ground. Refugees from war and poverty are still taking to unseaworthy boats and looking for safety in Mediterranean European countries.

Let’s face it, we are in a right mess! Capitalism has failed to deliver those trickle-down benefits to ordinary people. Meanwhile, the gap between rich and poor grows wider. In a mixed economy like the UK, the NHS should be supported and properly funded by the state. But public spending cuts put pressure on nurses and junior doctors to continue to deliver excellent healthcare in worse working conditions.

Do I have any crumbs of comfort?

Not really….Greta Thunberg for UN president?
