Gardening

We have had one summer of carrots, cabbages and broccoli. We let the slugs do what slugs do and still had a small plot of huge cabbage leaves, smallish carrots and broccoli that didn’t get picked at the right time.

The blackcurrants growing along the garden wall did well. I picked quite a lot of them and boiled them up for fruit compote. We had one or two strawberries and raspberries, but the apples are small, bitter and still not harvested.

We like the idea of raised beds, but not just yet. The backyard got power hosed, the bird feeder is full of seeds and the only tree in our back garden is shedding its red and golden leaves.

Parsley is thriving in a hanging basket, but its bedfellow, mint, has not done well. The yellow flowers pictured above keep us amused with their splash of colour. I think I’ll cut back the branches of our tree this winter, it’s blocking the view of the mountain.
