I set the alarm for 1am to watch the Tyson fight with my son. First on the card were two Super Featherweights, Bryan Vasquez, the WBA champion and his challenger, Rene Gonzalez.

This was full on, sometimes toe to toe boxing of high quality. Gonzalez could have made better use of his longer reach, but he was tempted to slug it out. They went at it for eight rounds in a smaller than usual ring and would have had the crowd cheering their performance, if there had been one. A split decision went to Vasquez.
Three or four hours later Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr showed what two greats in their 50s could still do. Rap artist Snoop Dogg said it was like watching “two of my uncles fighting at a barbecue”, and he wan’t too far from the truth. There was more wrestling than boxing and the two minute, eight rounds were soon over. Tyson never backed off and Roy Jones Jr didn’t have much room to show off his footwork. They scored it a draw, but in my book Tyson was a clear winner.
