Pandemic Stats

There is an awful lot of information to take in on a daily basis about Covid-19. If, like me, you embrace generalities, the fine detail becomes overwhelming. There’s stuff that you could probably have made a good guess at after all this time, like the elderly and people with pre-existing conditions being more at risk if they get the virus.

What about the other stats, like alcohol comsumption, tobacco smoking and so on?

The stats released by the British Medical Journal tell us a bit more about how we are all coping. The leap in psychological distress is accompanied by the rise in alcohol binge drinking and frequency. But, there is a surprising staus quo in smoking and loneliness statistics.

The age group most at risk of overdoing the alcohol binge drinking or increased frequency of consumption is those over 50 years of age.

The tired adage “”I would sooner have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy” sums up the way that some groups in society continue to deal with mental anguish.

My own behaviour is sadly predictable in that regard. Turn up the stress and I will be more inclined towards excess. Distractions help a great deal, whether it’s physical exercise, artistic endeavours or education courses.

Sticking to timetables would be sensible, but I haven’t got there yet. The psychology MOOC might take me a while to commit regular study periods to.
