I took a flag, a symbol of oppression
And soaked it in blood to make an impression
I requested small samples of blood for my art
So indigenous people could play a big part
In sharing the memory of trauma and pain
Inflicted by Britain again and again
Aboriginal people raised their objection
And the festival issued artistic rejection
That stopped my work showing a cloth soaked in red
A subject too raw for Tasmania’s dead
The blood of their people is not for display
No flags to be flown for murder today
