I sang in the choir at my Primary School and at Junior School until my voice broke. My parents paid for music lessons, yet I never learnt how to read music. I had a good memory for tunes and bluffed my way through new Psalms, Hymns and Choral works.
I recently started a short course on music theory and the confusion has returned. Every good boy may very well deserve favour, but the musical notation seems no clearer than when I was bluffing it as a lad.
The aim is to produce something musical for my own amusement. Singing in the shower is not enough. I have invested in an acoustic guitar and will be guided by Marty Schwartz (a Youtuber) whose instruction is pitched at my level. I’m off to buy a flexible pick or two.
If I learn to play something reasonably well, I will put it on the odespinner podcast. Marty recommends 5 minutes a day for a couple of months to get me started. Imagine if I could write some lyrics and strum along – bliss.
