Our semi-detached 3 bedroomed house was built at the end of the 1960s. We moved in 22 years ago and have made no improvements in all that time.
Now we have the money to make the property as energy efficient as possible. We will be replacing the oil fired heating system and all the radiators. That will reduce our heat wastage and prepare us for a new era of bio methane and hydrogen gas availability.
Next on the wish list is double glazing that completely seals the house. Then we will insulate the exterior wall and the roof space. We have been advised that a heat pump is not an option for us, so we will be installing a wood burning stove in the unused living room fireplace.
These changes mean the removal of water tanks from the attic and the immersion heater from our bedroom, giving us the extra space we need.
The flat roofs should be insulated on the outside and a slope or ‘fall’ introduced to improve drainage.
