I was invited to join three other guys on a guided walk learning about the history of whiskey making in Belfast. Was it a mistake to drink three pints of Guinness before the tour started? Possibly.
We were fed a bowl of stew along the way and more history than I could retain. Conor was a very knowledgeable guide and Patrick carried a selection of fine whiskies for us to sample at bars in central Belfast.
One of the surprising venues for our imbibing was the First Presbyterian Church. We sat in the Harland family pew. Harland and Wolff are famous shipbuilders in Belfast. They built the ill-fated Titanic ocean liner.
We ended the tour upstairs at Madden’s bar with a final whiskey tasting and a pint of the black stuff. After an excellent burger and chips at Bunsen I was beginning to feel the effects of the drink. Thankfully my companions made sure I got my train home safely. A great day out. My favourite whiskey? McConnell’s.
