Fergus, a man of 90 years and sober for 42 years told me this true story…

He was only on his first pint of the day in a bar in South Belfast in the 1980s when the gunmen burst in and started firing. The man next to him dragged him to the floor. From that position he saw a red haired woman standing nearby. He reached out to pull her out of harm’s way. His saviour received a bullet to the head.

When the coast was clear Fergus didn’t hang around waiting for the police. He was shaken up and wanted to find out what happened to the red head. Returning to the bar some time later he asked his friend the barman what happened to her.

“What woman? There was no woman in the bar.”

The man who dragged him to the floor had been taken to hospital and, despite his severe injury, survived.

Spirit or figment of the imagination?

Fergus was adamant that the red haired woman was there that day, but nobody else saw her.
