I have been watching the BBC series ‘The Corridors of Power’. It is a shocking revelation of the international community’s inaction in the face of genocide. Whether it was Rwanda, Bosnia or Kosovo the evidence was in the hands of nations who could have done more to stop the bloodshed. The USA knew that the Hutus planned to eradicate all the Tutsis, but they waited. What for? Men, women and children butchered with machetes. The Belgian UN forces powerless in the face of a massive Tutsi onslaught.

The images of troops opening fire on civilians, dragging the corpses away or shooting men beside huge pits for their bodies is extremely shocking. Slobodan Milosovic, the Serbian leader and a hero to his people describing the genocide of Muslim Bosnians as revenge for events that happened hundreds of years ago beggars belief. Srebrenica is an atrocity the international powers could not ignore.

The aerial bombing of Serbian artillery positions intensified and Bosnians were persuaded to accept the redrawing of their country’s borders after the Serbian invasion.
