Our rational thoughts do not allow for flights of fancy or wildly emotional reactions, so are we using a different area of the brain when we become creative?
If we organise shapes on a canvas or structure a story, are we giving full vent to our creativity? Maybe we can be both rational and creative, using the practical to release the artistic.
The Jackson Pollock style of painting is not for everyone. Freeing the inner child, or at least trying to remove the restraints of adulthood, must be the ambition of most artists. Perhaps that is more important for impressionists, but the desirable goal must surely be to free the artistic spirit to go wherever it feels like.
Poetry can have structure and a mystical or metaphysical nature. Jazz can create new boundaries within that musical genre. We may not always understand or appreciate innovation in art forms, but that should not inhibit artists from continuing to express themselves aesthetically.
