The escalation of the war in the Middle East is a complex situation. Hamas is not Gaza although it is the elected authority in Gaza, Hezbollah is not the government of Lebanon, but receives support and military aid from the government of Iran

Civilian populations of Gaza and Lebanon are paying the price for the attacks on Israel that started with the Hamas atrocity last October.

The UN Secretary General has been declared a persona non grata in Israel by the Israeli Defence Minister by daring to say that the Hamas attack did not exist in a vacuum.

Israel relies on the political and military support of the USA, but has not responded to their calls for a ceasefire or a two state solution to the Palestinian question. Many believe that Netanyahu has an interest in continuing the war to avoid prosecution both at home and abroad. Meanwhile refugees flee the war zones and the death toll rises.

It seems obvious that Israel cannot prevent attacks by Palestinians and their allies if they continue to ignore the need for a negotiated settlement.
