Florida state has a statute on its books that states “every person deliberately assisting another in the commission of self-murder shall be guilty of manslaughter, a felony of the second degree”.

Self-murder is a term I have not come across before and is an offensive expression for the decision to take your own life.

There is a bill to be debated in the UK parliament on 15 November which proposes a change in the law to facilitate assisted dying for adults with a terminal illness.

There are opponents to the bill such as Liz Carr, a disability rights campaigner, who feel that this could herald a broader relaxation of the law, putting pressure on people with disabilities to consider ending their lives early.
