One nation or what?

One Nation Conservatives have failed to endorse either of the two remaining candidates for leader of the Conservative party. This group of MPs used to be more influential within the party, then came Brexit and a lurch to the right.

Given the class system and social inequality in the UK it is hard to see how there can be a One Nation anything. By nation do they mean the two nations England and Scotland plus the two principalities of Wales and Northern Ireland?

If the intention was tlo bring together the disparate parts of the Conservative party under one banner, that time has passed. Macron achieved something similar in France by establishing a party’ and its principles by focus groups. A marketing ploy that produced spectacular results in a very short timescale. Tony Blair did something similar with New Labour.

It reminds me of an ICT focus group I was invited to over 20 years ago. We were asked to imagine a box and then contribute suggestions as to what the box could do.

I can imagine a party that represents the majority and tries to improve people’s lives by effectively managing resources and encouraging innovation. In the words of John Lennon ‘maybe I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.’
