You may have thought that I was still banging on about consciousness, but you’d be wrong. I have been lucky with my gambling of late. Some informed betting on Ireland to beat England and who would score a try. In the same way I placed what I call a ‘comfort bet’ on Ulster to win the first half and lose the second to the Scarlets.
But reading the form for horse races and trying to predict which horse will win is something I occasionally persuade myself I am capable of. Some lucky betting saw me actually bank my winnings, but subsequently I have failed miserably to pick winners.
So a bit of knowledge can help you make sensible bets, but sport can throw plenty of surprises your way. Just ask the French rugby team after their defeat by Scotland or Scotland after they were beaten by Italy.
My £7 bet on Dinoblue to win the 2:40 at Cheltenham was inspired and reaped £19.60 But it was a firm favourite unlike my forthcoming bets on the rugby. I like to keep a £20 pot and bank any significant winnings above that. Deposits of £20 are a mark of my failures. My bets are typically £1 so I won’t be joining Gamblers Anonymous just yet.
