Bigotry and hatred

We are not unique in this part of the world for displays of vile behaviour. The recent film of a crowd of men singing a song mocking the murdered newlywed, Michaela McAreavey is a new low in sectarianism.

Divided society or not, we all have a responsibility to our fellow human beings. That anyone should find it amusing to mock the tragic and brutal death of a young bride on her honeymoon is beyond belief.

This incident shows the dehumanising of an individual based on faith alone. Nazi Germany used propaganda to dehumanise Jewish people, and Apartheid-era South Africa discriminated against its population based on race.

It is a short step from bigotry to violence. We should oppose it and expose it for the sake of humanity.
