My nationality is a hotchpotch of English, Welsh and a soupçon of Irish. The label British doesnt win many friends in some parts of West Belfast. I chose Anglo-Celt just because it sounds nice

As a male white,anglo-protestant my social advantages were bound to be fairly hefty even before I attended an English public school. So trying to imagine the life experiences of people who make up the diverse tapestry of England’s cosmopolitan cities is difficult.

My friend at school was from Thailand and arrived at our school in Sussex with no English. Through hard work and separation from his family he did well academically. My colleague at work lived in Balham and had  a Carribbean heritage. None of this equips me to put myself in the shoes of people whose skin colour makes them a target for racists.
