We are approaching the Celtic New Year festival or Samhain. Ancient pagan festivals were often adopted by Christians such as Halloween, the eve of All Saints Day. Children go trick or treating, although I don’t know anyone who would perform a trick rather than hand over a few sweets.

My own concession to celebrating ghosts and ghouls was to hang the above doll in front of our house. Then came a sign from a higher power in the form of a storm that shook the doll loose. The pumpkin will become a food ingredient, probably for soup or stew, rather than a scary lantern.
