Creating zones

Open plan design can be spacious and airy, so creating zones is a subtle art that requires a bit of thought. For instance, in a small bungalow with bathing facilities in the rear of the building, how you arrange the shower, vanity basin, and toilet is very important.

If your occupier requires a bidet, the temptation is to reply, “Are you off your trolley?” But solutions are always available to the creative types. My preferred option would be an outdoor facility housed in a shed. This nod to a bygone era may seem outmoded, but a shed beside the main structure would not be totally out of place.

Bungalow planning

In the main living area, storage has to be incorporated in the sofa-bed, seating, and table items. The table could be a fold away. TV and computer screen must be on a hinged bracket.  Lighting should use smart light bulbs to create the warmth and ambience desired.

Windows are a great way of bringing the outdoors in. Surrounding the window area with green notes and references to nature can smooth the transformation from small accommodation to raised beds and the herb garden.
