I have studied a bit of global justice on a distance learning course, and the idea of a supranational authority has come up a few times.
The reason we might need a supranational authority is self-evident. Global politics isn’t working. The rich and powerful nations dominate the world stage, their actions unlawful, and the consequences untold misery for their chosen targets.
Who would agree to a supranational body if it might curtail the excesses of a world power? Even if the entire membership of the United Nations voted in favour of a notional supranational authority, what voting mechanism would they use? Could Russia veto the protection of Greenland? Might the USA block the free trade with Cuba? If a supranational body existed, it would have to be autonomous, without the restrictions of national interference.
