It was the inevitable departure of the Prime Minister that had been predicted for some time. Keir Starmer seems to be a man of conviction and integrity, but lacks charisma. Some of his government’s decisions came in for a lot of public condemnation, particularly the appointment of Peter Mandelson as US ambassador after he failed the candidate vetting procedure. Thankfully, and unlike Tony Blair, he did not lead us into a Middle Eastern war because of our special relationship with the USA.
If Andy Burnham becomes the next leader of the Labour party, which looks likely, he will have the same hard economic decisions to make if he wants to pursue a socialist agenda. Balancing the books after the Conservatives crashed the economy was always going to be tricky, but cutting the winter fuel allowance was a daft own goal.
