As an old fart who likes music I am getting a reputation for picking obscure songs at work to listen to on a Friday afternoon. Today’s choice was anything by Gilbert Becaud, so we listened to Et Maintenant – a classic ( even on crap speakers). Nathalie is a fantastically uplifting song full of energy – you can see why he was known as Monsieur 100,000 volts ( and why he changed his surname from Silly).
Here’s another song in french that’s an ironic gut wrencher from Jacques Brel – Ne me quitte pas.
Dusty Springfield covered it rather well with If You Go Away
For the 80’s I’d have to pick Sad Café and Everyday Hurts and Wild Boys by Duran Duran.
Now I hope you weren’t expecting me to divulge all the memories evoked by these songs. Suffice it to say that there’s good and bad stuff going on there.
This is a real blast from the past and one of the few 45s I bought with my pocket money – Gotta See Jane by R Dean Taylor.
This was a family favourite and a brilliant piece of lunacy by Spike Milligan – My September Love
Django and Grappelli got my folks swinging .
My brother introduced me to an Italian pop star, Lucio Battisti – Soli still sounds good
